What does the availability of plant nutrients depend on?

The fertilization of agricultural plants with mineral fertilizers is an integral and extremely important part of agrarian technology. However, in some cases, its efficiency can be not be as expected.

It turns out that the availability of sufficient amount of nutrients in the soil is not a guarantee of their supply to plants. The nutrient assimilation process depends on many factors. They can be divided into two groups: physical and chemical properties of the soil and environmental factors.

Influence of soil characteristics on the nutrient assimilation

The activity of mineral absorption by plants is influenced by the following factors:

1. Concentration of soil solution.

It is proved that active substances of mineral fertilizers migrate to plants better at moderate-raised soil solution concentrations. Instead, with excessive values, the supply of water and nutrients becomes more complicated.

2. The ratio of macro and microelements.

The essence of this factor lies in such phenomena as the chemical synergism and antagonism. In other words, some nutrients, which are available in soil in large concentration, can either hinder or facilitate the absorption of other elements.

3. Soil moisture content.

The following regularity has been proven: the lower the soil moisture content is, the wore is the rate of the nutrient absorption. However, the excess moisture can also have the negative impact. Under such conditions, ions of some elements are transported much faster than others, which leads to imbalance.

4. Soil acidity. 

Increasing or reducing the acidity of the fertile layer leads to a change in the level of micro- and macroelements. For instance, zinc and iron are better absorbed in the acidic environment, but the amount of available nitrogen and phosphorus therein is reduced.

Influence of environmental conditions on the availability of fertilizing elements

The main weather factors that affect the assimilation of nutrients by plants are the air temperature and light.

1. Air temperature.

It is scientifically and practically proved that the absorption of all fertilizing elements are stopped at an air temperature below 10 degrees.

2. Light. 

The role of light in the plant development is explained by the simple principles of photosynthesis. If there are sun rays, then a plant absorbs the nutrients. If the lighting is insufficient, then the photosynthesis slows down, and the nutrient absorption intensity decreases. 

Consequently, the availability of nutrients is influenced by many factors. They shall be taken into account at the stage of crop fertilization. This will ensure the rational use of mineral fertilizers.
